  22. This program is based on a book called "Doctor Who - The Universal Databank",
  23. by Jean-Marc Lofficier. The information is also stored on Jean-Marc's
  24. webpage for all to see. I asked him for permission to use the info
  25. in my program and he wished me good luck.

  29. INTRODUCTION.

  31.     Hello to all you Doctor Who fans out there, or even non-Doctor Who
  32. fans as well (I'll talk to you whether you're a fan or not). This as the
  33. title suggests is a Doctor Who Database. Almost all the characters from
  34. the first Doctor to the Seventh are included.
  35.     I've always loved the idea of having a massive database of my
  36. favourite all time program, with all the information I ever need about it.
  37.     
  38.         This original project took about a year to complete. There have
  39. been many changes since the original 1.2 version. In fact it seems like
  40. I have taken a step backwards, as the original version had a nice gui,
  41. graphics and pictures. The problem was that the original program was
  42. written in Amospro which is a nice language but has the problem of not
  43. working too well with graphics cards and interacting with other software.
  44. If you would like to try out the original with the graphics it will remain
  45. on my webpage until I sort out the new gui for my new `Doctor Who` database.

  52. THE TECHNICAL BIT (Or the Boring bit nobody reads, I don't know why I bother).

  54.     The actual text data for this program originally took a whole
  55. 880k. Obviously this is quite a lot, and wouldn't leave much room on the
  56. disk for the program. It took me about 3 months to work out a way of
  57. actually compressing the text down so that I could fit the program and
  58. data onto one disk.
  59.     I think the whole project took me about a year to complete,
  60. and by the end I was desperate to get it finished. It took so long
  61. that I've probably memorised half the information it displays and I
  62. don't really need the program.
  63.     I'm sorry if this history is quite short, as I'm not the sort
  64. of person to write down every date I did a new modification. And I
  65. suppose you couldn't careless as long as the program actually works.

  69. really sad, but I don't really care.

  77. Doctor Who Database v1.2  Yes there was a few versions before this too but I won't go
  78.                           into that. This version had it all, sound pictures and a nice
  79.                           graphical interface. The downfall was that is was written in
  80.                           Amospro and even though did the job and was very well done,
  81.                           some people refused to even look at it because it was done in
  82.                           Amos.

  84. Doctor Who Database v2.1  Well after about 2 months of learning C and giving Jay Cornwall
  85.                           a huge headache, v2.1 was released. It had no gui and only worked
  86.                           via the cli/shell environment. I have since found a few mistakes
  87.                           in the program since, but it is solid and will work on all amigas
  88.                           I should imagine.

  90. Doctor Who Database v2.2  Now we are getting back to a workable program. I have added a gui.
  91.                           You can now enter a file by clicking on it's name, or by using
  92.                           the powerful search engine, by typing in part of a name.

  97. Well for a start, somebody called Amimon has given me the idea to use
  98. buttons to go through the files one by one. Seems like a good idea and will
  99. hopefully be implemented in the next version.

  101. I hope to have sound effects at certain points in the program, not really
  102. important I know but I am thinking about it.

  104. I hope to work out how to put pictures into my gui so that when you select a file
  105. you will also see a picture. This is not as simple as it sounds I have been told,
  106. so this may take some time.
